scene, and started doing the same thing they did on the C64: crack games.
They dominated this scene around 1987.

The old Eclipse is little-known, and all that the group ever amounted to
was releasing a few cracks from Rasta Catcha. There is no relation to the
new group using the name Eclipse.

Elanthia was a Canadian demo group of 5 members who, once upon a time,
decided to try making a demo to help disprove the notion that Europeans are
the only ones who make demos. The result was "Debut". The group was born
around 1991 and died around 1994, as all the members eventually ended up at
different universities and got too busy with their real lives. Thanks to
Tlotoxl for information.

Elven 11 (E11)
--------------
Elven 11 was an italian demo group. As far as we can see, the group showed
its first signs of life with the 4k intro "Another Rainy Day" [12/96] by Dip
and Aga at The Party 96.

Another Rainy Day (1996, 28.12, AGA 4k Intro).
code: Dip, Aga, gfx: none, music: none.
6th in The Party 96 4k intro competition.
review: "ARD" is a really good 4k'er, actually! It opens with a bumpmapped
Elven logo, and continues with what looks like an inverted voxel - with
craters rather than hills. This is followed by some blooming,
mathematically created shapes in beautiful colors, before another bump
example with a moveable lightsource. The show is rounded off with a real
showstopper; a real good voxel routine. The entire 4k intro is set to a
'soundtrack' that sounds a lot like a heartbeat. E11 certainly managed to
cram a lot into this small space, and here's one reviewer who's certainly
looking forward to the next one! =) [glenn]

Fecha (1997, 14.12, AGA ?MB File).
6th in the Astrosyn 97 demo competition.
review: Sadly, "Fecha" is a demo that's more occupied with showing us
endless reruns of the same rendered spaceships/grabbed rollercoaster
ride than treating us to anything innovative or interesting. I'm sorry,
Embora, but this didn't manage to hold my attention for very long.
The good news is: The only way is up! OK, this is not BADLY done, it's
just that I feel it doesn't have much of interest for me as a casual
viewer. If it had shown all its animations just ONCE, and ran about 30
seconds, it would have gotten a much better rating!
This requires some fastmem, though the exact amount is uncertain.
Judging by the fact that I had to reboot to run it, should give you
  some idea... [glenn]

review: How this managed to finish DEAD LAST at the Assembly is a total
mystery, since this is one great piece of demo art! There's competence on
every level here, from the fabulous code to the excellent visuals to the
weird and wonderful tune by Heatbeat. And that's not all: It's ORIGINAL

Essence (ESC, 1992-, http://www.s-sense.de)
-------------------------------------------
GER> Chromag (Timm Albers, music, 05/93), Dascon (Bernd Hoffmann, music,
12/92), Elric (swap, 05/93), Touchstone (Thomas Jansen, code, 12/92).

Essence was a german demo group, formed late 1992 by Touchstone (code),
Groo & Rufferto (gfx), Dascon (music), Slicer (swap) and Powerswap (swap) -
all previous members of Delicious Designs, who wanted to form a german
friendship group with members all living close by each other. Thanks to the
Essence homepage for a lot of the background history of the group!
Their first production (prepared for Delicious, but released under
Essence) was released in december, in the days before The Party 92.
"Dreaming" [12/92] was a good little dentro, but unfortunately it was no
spread enough, and suffered a fate of obscurity at the time of its release.
Within, the joining of German swapper Elric (previously known as
Speedhawk/Rebels) was announced. At The Party itself, Groo and Rufferto
scored a strong third place in the graphics competition.
  1993 - Early this year, german musician Chromag - a friend of Dascon's -
left Dual Crew to join. The first official meeting was held in february, at
Slicer's place, and the "Meeting Intro 93" [02/93] was released. Next the
group started working on a music disk for Chromag, but a few things did NOT
go according to plan. Dual Crew organizer Red Devil was very upset at
Chromag leaving, and extensively tried to get him to rejoin, promising him
an awesome music disk. As a result, Chromag finally reconsidered, and
rejoined Dual Crew Shining (the merge had happened in the meantime), and
the result was released later that year as "Chromagic". So Essence stood
with a nearly completed musicdisk of their own, and no musicians who had
enough good tunes lying around to justify a musicdisk for any of them - so
a decision was made to rework some of the routines for a trackmo instead,
and so work started on "A.S.S." In march, the group produced two pack
menues for Elric (Empty Tankard) and Slicer (Brainfood). Then Slicer (M.
Schroeder) decided to leave the scene, and Powerswap changed his handle to
P$ and stopped swapping to concentrate on organizing the group. The one
remaining swapper in the group was thus Elric, who around the same time got
very inactive, and released just one single issue of his pack. Finally he
was asked to leave, and left both Essence and the scene. So, in april, the
swapper problem was resolved when Slam was recruited from X-Trade. He was
given Elric's pack, slightly reworked it - the name changed to Broken
Tankard - and released many issues. Then the group grew even bigger, as
three new members were recruited - first Storm (swap) was recruited from
DCS in may, and he brought in WOTW (music) from The Silents and Roman
(code) from Agnostic Front the following month. Roman's first production for
Essence was the intro "Cardiac Arrest" [07/93]. Touchstone also made a quick
production for WOTW to publish his chip tunes, and thus "Talktime #1"
[07/93] was released - unfortunately it became a one-off. In august, WOTW's
close friend D-Sign (gfx) followed from The Silents. The group's first
major demo production, "A.S.S." [08/93], was then released in august. After
failing to complete it for two parties in a row, the demo was finally
released outside of any competition. After this followed a more quiet
period, and a 40k intro was prepared for the competition at the big The
Party in denmark in december. Roman, Touchstone, Slam, D-Sign, CAT, Dascon
and WOTW all went to the party, and the intro - "D" [12/93] - finally
reached second position in the competition, and was thus the group's
biggest success yet.
1994 - CAT donated the title picture for Absolute's diskmag "Sledge
Hammer #13" [late/94].
1999 - Touchstone contributed to Haujobb's winning demo "Mnemonics"
[04/99] at the Mekka Symposium 2k-1.

 Dreaming (1992, 17.12, OCS 1MB Dentro).
code: Touchstone, gfx: Groo & Rufferto, music: "Dcn_Dreamteam.Final" by
  Dascon (4ch MOD format).
review: Cool first dentro from Essence, spread in the days before The
Party to announce the group to the world. Nothing groundbreaking, but
good effects and cool graphics lend themselves well to this small
production. This intro announced the joining of Elric.
Original file size is 223708 bytes, including an ascii message flashed

code: Touchstone, gfx: Groo & Rufferto, music: "Dcn_Langsyne" by Dascon
  (ProTracker MOD format).
review: This was Essence's second ever release, and not terribly
  exciting. It's a scroll-selector, a scrolltext, and a whole load of glenz-
objects in the background. Obviously made mostly for messages, it's not
the worst nor the best of its type. Selecting Groo & Rufferto's scroll
displays their 3rd-ranked picture from The Party 92. [glenn]

Cardiac Arrest (1993, 06.07, ECS Intro).
code: Roman, gfx: Groo & Rufferto, music: "Folklore" by WOTW (4ch MOD

only one main routine, a dot-cube that stretches, which isn't that much -
but still OK. This was Roman's first production for Essence. [glenn]

  Talktime #1 (1993, 12.07, ECS Musicfile).
code: Touchstone, gfx: Touchstone, Groo & Rufferto (scrollfont), music:
WOTW. info: Chiptune 'mag', akin to Chipmania, WOTW's baby. Amusing if
nothing else for the fact that Touchstone actually drew a logo for it -
and it's not half bad either :) There were no additional issues released.

  A.S.S. (1993, 23.08, ECS Trackmo).
code: Touchstone, Roman, gfx: Groo & Rufferto, music: "a.s.s.-loader" and
"frimpong-maso" by Dascon, "joints!girls&sex2" by WOTW (ProRunner format).
review: Slick, polished trackmo from the then-fresh German group is
highlighted by several examples of fine pixel artistry from Groo &
Rufferto, and some competent design. This won't set the world on fire, but
is good fun and worth watching for the graphics alone.
The release date appears nowhere in the demo, it was retrieved from a
bbs filelist. There is no indication that this was released at any party.
An HD installer for this demo is available on AmiNet (in games/patch, of
all places). A.S.S. means Antediluvian Sloppy Spectacle. [glenn]

  D (1993, 28.12, ECS 40k Intro).
code: Touchstone, gfx: D-Sign, music: WOTW.
2nd in The Party 93 40k intro competition.
review: Once again Touchstone shows his flair for design. This one
doesn't contain anything revolutionary, but the way it is all put
together sets it out as a good intro. Nice and cute. [glenn]

  ROM #1 (1994, .08, ECS 1MB Trackloaded Diskmag).
INT - code: Roman, gfx: Covert Action Team, Nose/Jetset (logo), music:
        Covert Action Team.
MAG - code: Touchstone, gfx: Covert Action Team (panel, design, fonts,
clipart), D-Sign (welcome, clipart), music: "ROM Theme" by Dascon,
"Weird Personalities" by Lizardking/Razor 1911 (The Player 6.0A
        format), editor: Mop.
review: ROM kicks off in style, with two fabulous full screen pictures and
a big logo from the Covert Action Team (CAT), and a suitably heavy tune
to accompany a kickin' intro. The mag itself doesn't do much worse,
opening with a great lego man welcome picture by D-Sign. Though it was a
first issue, this mag obviously was a highly anticipated project. Its main
editor had previously helmed the editor spot on McDisk and one issue of
the highly hyped Compass (for Alcatraz) - and was among the most respected
sceners in the mag scene at the time. The world was waiting for something
truly great - and got it. The design of the mag was a little
groundbreaking, opting for a highly visual style, with the different
sections having logos instead of just names, etc. The editorial content of
this first issue is a little rocky in places, but in hindsight you can't
help but giggle at articles like "Write Your Own CD! A New Age for Game
Piracy?" by Eye/Gloom. He had NO IDEA how prophetic that article would be,
I'd be willing to bet ;) The release date is an estimate, based on
information contained in the mag. We believe the month is correct, but are
not yet sure about the date. We're working on it.
The first picture seen in the intro, "Ambush", was already
released for the graphics competition at The Party 3 (where it was
released under the fictious name Artcore/Essence, since CAT had already
delivered one picture for the competition - S.E.X, 6th). It finished 40th,
so they could perhaps have spared themselves the extra effort ;)
Lizardking's tune "Weird Personalities" was later re-used in the Razor
1911 musicdisk "Memorial Songs II" [01/95]. A kickdown to KS 1.3 was
required to get the mag working on my hardware setup. After this, the mag
worked beautifully - without it, it didn't even get to the intro. The mag
itself seems well coded, apart from a few obvious glitches here and there.
I strongly doubt I have 717 MBytes of chip memory, Touchstone...and I _DO_
have an MMU, no matter what your mag says! The mag has also been tested,
and found to work, under the emulator WinFellow 0.4.3 build 1 - snapshot
  2001/11/15. [glenn]
